The Sumitomo Foundation invites applications for Japan-Related Research Projects grant to promote the mutual understanding between Japan and other Asian countries.
Purpose and Target of the Grant
By supporting research related to Japan (Japanese studies, comparative research that includes Japan, international relations research, exchange history research, etc.) by researchers from each country, mainly targeting East Asian and Southeast Asian countries, they will support each of these countries. The aim is to create a foundation for deepening understanding of Japan within the country, and ultimately to help promote mutual understanding between Asian countries and Japan.
Funding Information
Budget Total: ¥50 million.
Grant Amount for Each Project: Maximum ¥2.0 million
Number of Projects: Approximately 70
Grant Period: One year (April 2024 through March 2025), but can be extended to total two-year maximum if required with specific reason after starting research subject to the approval of The Sumitomo Foundation.
Eligible Projects
Areas of Research
arch project, mainly in the field of social sciences or humanities that is related to Japan.
Notes:
The following projects are not eligible:
Research projects for profit making or those conceivably conducive to profit making.
Contracted research projects for a third party.
research projects which have been already substantially completed.
This grant is not a scholarship, a fellowship or a grant for publication of research results alone.

Individual or collaborative research.
Eligibility
The applicant must:
Be a researcher of Asian (non-Japanese) nationality.
Be living outside Japan during the grant period. (Please do not apply if you intend to stay in Japan for more than six months during the grant period as a student, visiting professor etc.).
Take personal responsibilities for conducting the proposed research project.
