The British Council is initiating the second edition of the Creative Collaborations Grants to support collaborations between UK creatives and arts and culture institutions from Türkiye.

The British Council aspires to link UK cultural professionals and organisations with their international peers and audiences by enabling connection and networking, and catalysing and facilitating creative collaborations, showcasing and touring.

This grant is designed to support artists and arts institutions based in Türkiye to make and develop creative and artistic partnerships with UK peers and to encourage new projects and innovation.

Aims
  • The aims of this grant call are to:

    • help arts organisations from Türkiye develop and deliver creative projects in collaboration with UK partners,

    • share, celebrate and broaden appreciation of arts and culture from the UK and Türkiye through diverse, inclusive and innovative programming,

    • create and share opportunities for professional collaborations between creatives and institutions, including public and private institutions, NGOs, universities, creative hubs and the creative industries in the UK and Türkiye,

    • inspire audiences from the UK and Türkiye to build positive relations with one another through cultural exchange,

    • increase participation and access to cultural and educational activities.

Project Scope
  • Proposed projects could – though not restricted to - include the following art forms:

    • Film

    • Creative technology (incl. games, immersive, mixed, augmented and virtual reality)

    • Literature

    • Visual Arts

    • Theatre and dance (including circus)

    • Architecture, design and fashion (including craft)

    • Music

  • Cross-art form and cross-disciplinary projects (e.g. art + science, art + technology)

  • Applicants can submit their proposals for projects of – but not restricted to – performances, residencies, exhibitions, festivals, showcases, screening programmes, panels and talks and workshops.

  • Projects could be delivered face-to-face, online or in hybrid form. They welcome projects incorporating digital innovation.

  • Projects can address any subject or theme – but they particularly invite collaborations that focus on gender, race, ethnicity, disability, inclusion, ageing and other areas of diversity.

  • All projects should target a bilingual audience (Turkish and English). Projects including Turkish Sign Language are encouraged.

Funding Information
  • This year they will be selecting a maximum of seven institutions to grant each with at most 350,000 TL to develop creative collaborations and encourage innovative and artistic productions among artists and arts and culture organizations in Türkiye and the United Kingdom.

Eligibility

Criteria
  • The grants are open to arts and culture organisations, and higher education/research organisations with an arts and culture focus.

  • An ‘organisation’ is defined as a legally registered entity with a registered bank account in Türkiye, and can include collectives, consortia, community, charity, private and public.

  • Grants will be awarded to organisations (including consortia, community-based and artist-led).

  • They are keen to receive applications from organisations in Türkiye with whom they have not previously worked, especially those based outside Istanbul. (Applications from and collaborations with the earthquake region are encouraged.)

  • The activity must showcase UK artistic content (this may be part of an overall programme featuring artistic content from Türkiye and/or other countries), from any genre, created by emerging and established UK creatives.

  • The proposed project/event should take place between 1 September 2023 and 31 March 2024.

  • Each applicant can submit one proposal only.

  • Institutions which were awarded the Creative Collaboration Grant 2022 are not eligible to apply.

  • The grantee should use Turkish Airlines and/or British Airways and must get prior approval from the British Council for the choice of hotels for the UK participants.

  • Successful applicants will be asked to submit a Summary Report after the delivery of the project covering budget, audience, press coverage and visuals. The template will be shared during the contract phase.

  • Payments will be made in two (2) instalments: 75 per cent to be paid within 30 days upon contract signing and 25 per cent to be paid upon submission of the Summary Report via bank transfer to the applicant’s bank account.

  • A budget plan should be provided which shows a full cost breakdown and sources of anticipated income or project support including in-kind contributions.

  • The event should take place in an accessible space or digital platform.

  • The British Council should be mentioned in all communication materials and spaces as a project ‘supporter’. British Council’s approval must be obtained for all written and visual materials to be used in external communication. The partner will be expected to market the activity effectively and will be asked to share a comprehensive marketing plan demonstrating how they plan to attract and measure good audience size for the event(s).

  • Not eligible for this grant scheme:

    • Invitations to conferences or other non-performance events, unless as part of a broader programme including live music performance, supported through this grant.

    • Invitations to attend educational activities (e.g. courses, research, PhD or any other degree).

    • Support for language learning.

  • The British Council will not take responsibility for organising participant invitations or visas or any other administrative aspects of the event.

  • Organisations applying for grants should be registered in Türkiye and act as legal entities.

  • The application will be submitted in English and in writing. You may contact assigned British Councill staff if you have difficulty accessing the form and/or providing information in writing. Applications in the Turkish language won’t be accepted.

  • UK creatives:

    • can work in any artistic genre.

    • should have relevant experience at a professional level that has attracted demonstrable interest from the arts and culture industry in the UK.

    • should be interested in collaboration and working on new artistic and creative projects with others and forging international connections to support future collaborative working.

    • They are keen to receive applications including UK creatives with whom they have not previously worked, especially those based outside London.
