Funding Available to Explore Carbon Management Opportunities in Water Utilities
About
The Water Research Foundation (WRF) invites proposals for a research project designed to provide practical, research‑based insights for water utilities by mapping carbon flows across drinking water, stormwater, wastewater, and advanced treatment systems. The study will examine process emissions, residuals, and biogas, while identifying opportunities for carbon recovery, capture, conversion, storage, and avoidance. It will also evaluate value creation pathways such as products, avoided costs, and environmental attributes, alongside mechanisms and partnerships required for implementation. The research will assess how these opportunities vary across different system types and local contexts, focusing on common scenarios for utilities, and will analyze implications for greenhouse gas accounting and environmental claims. WRF will provide up to $300,000 in funding, with an anticipated project duration of 24 months from contract start.
Eligibility
Proposals are accepted from U.S. and non‑U.S. entities, including educational institutions, research organizations, governmental agencies, consultants, and other for‑profit organizations. All applicants must demonstrate the capacity to deliver high‑quality research and comply with WRF’s Timeliness Policy. Researchers who are late on ongoing WRF‑sponsored studies without approved no‑cost extensions are not eligible to be named participants in new proposals.
