Call for Applications: Heritage Innovation Grant

Grant Size $10,000 to $100,000   ,   Closing Date

About

The Mondriaan Fund invites museums, archives, and cultural heritage organisations to apply for support for innovative projects and research that create new narratives, presentations, or approaches in the heritage sector. The program aims to strengthen the experience of heritage collections while fostering knowledge sharing and audience engagement across the Netherlands and the Caribbean part of the Kingdom. Supported activities may include developing contemporary perspectives on collections, piloting mobile oral history studios, and conducting feasibility studies on the use of emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence or gamification in heritage presentation and preservation.

Funding varies by project type: substantive projects may receive up to 40% of variable project-related costs, with a minimum project budget of €25,000; research tracks may receive up to 70% of costs, with a maximum contribution of €15,000 and no minimum budget requirement. Applications are accepted twice annually and must be submitted in PDF format through the online system. Proposals are reviewed for completeness, assessed by an advisory committee, and finalized by the Board of the Mondriaan Fund. Due to budgetary limits, awarded amounts may be lower than requested.

Eligibility

Eligible applicants include museums, archives, and collection-holding cultural heritage institutions with a public presentation function in the Netherlands or the Caribbean part of the Kingdom. Non-profit cultural organisations focusing on heritage in these regions may also apply if collaborating with at least one collection-holding institution. The lead applicant must be a legal entity or collective of legal entities not aimed at generating profit, and proposed activities must not have a commercial purpose. Institutions for art education, sector institutes, and post-academic institutions are excluded, as are projects already funded by other Mondriaan Fund programs or public funds. Funding is not available for fixed costs, restoration, museum construction, or regular operations. Publications or events are only eligible if they form a minor, integral part of the main presentation.
