Call for Project Proposals Outside Operational Phase 8 Landscapes (Botswana)

Grant Size $10,000 to $100,000   ,   Closing Date

About

The Global Environment Facility Small Grants Programme (GEF SGP), implemented by UNDP Botswana, invites proposals for innovative, community-led projects outside the three designated OP8 landscapes: Makgadikgadi Wetlands Area, Bobirwa District, and the Panhandle of the Okavango Delta. The initiative seeks to foster inclusive, scalable projects that strengthen local partnerships and deliver measurable environmental and social benefits. Eligible activities must address at least one strategic priority: conservation of threatened ecosystems and species, sustainable agriculture and fisheries with a focus on food security, or low-carbon energy access with co-benefits. Projects should demonstrate environmental impact, meaningful community participation, social inclusion, and potential for sustainability or replication. The program emphasizes indigenous and traditional knowledge systems, biodiversity-friendly practices, livelihood diversification, restoration of degraded land, and adoption of renewable or energy-efficient technologies. Grants of up to USD 50,000 (equivalent in Botswana Pula) are available, with a maximum project duration of two years.

Eligibility

Applicants must be non-profit-oriented institutions legally registered in Botswana, including Civil Society Organizations (NGOs, Community-Based Organizations, Cooperative Societies) and Academic or Research Institutions established by an Act of Parliament. Companies, private sector entities, and individuals are not eligible. Applicants must provide valid proof of registration and demonstrate sound financial management, governance, and reporting systems. Consortia of CSOs may apply, provided one CSO serves as the lead entity. Proposals will be evaluated based on alignment with program priorities, capacity to deliver environmental and social benefits, and potential for sustainability, replication, or scale-up.
