The Restack Consortium provides funding to independent researchers and projects that advance open, collaborative, and vendor‑neutral internet technology stacks. Established to strengthen digital autonomy and sustainability, the program supports the creation of operational internet commons across the full technology stack—from hardware to end‑user applications—free from vendor lock‑in.

Funding is available for a wide range of activities, including the design and development of free and open‑source software and hardware, technical validation and inquiry, software engineering for new use cases or quality improvements, formal security proofs and audits, documentation and educational resources, standardisation efforts, usability and inclusive design improvements, packaging and deployment support, scientific research, participation in technical and community events, project management, and essential infrastructure costs.

Grants range from €5,000 to €50,000, with potential for larger allocations if projects demonstrate strong scalability. The total program budget is €7 million, with successive calls expected until early 2027 or until funds are fully distributed.

Eligibility

Applications are open to independent researchers, nonprofit entities, and project teams committed to advancing open and collaborative digital infrastructure. Proposals must clearly demonstrate alignment with the Consortium’s mission of building a vendor‑neutral, self‑sustaining internet stack. Applicants should provide a detailed project plan, budget, and timeline, showing how the proposed work contributes to the development of open digital commons. Evaluation will consider technical merit, innovation, feasibility, and potential for long‑term impact.
