Grant Size $10,000 to $100,000   ,   Closing Date

About

The Global Environment Facility (GEF) Small Grants Programme (SGP), implemented by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), is inviting proposals for community-led initiatives in Papua New Guinea that contribute to biodiversity conservation, climate adaptation and resilience, sustainable livelihoods, and environmentally sustainable development. This first call under Operational Phase 8 (OP8) prioritizes projects within the Sepik-Hunstein Landscape, the New Britain Ridge-to-Reef Landscape and Seascape, and the Mount Wilhelm Climate Resilient Landscape, where approximately 70% of programme resources will be allocated. The programme supports activities focused on biodiversity conservation, climate-resilient development, sustainable agriculture and food systems, sustainable livelihood creation, social inclusion, community empowerment, and knowledge-sharing and innovation. Projects must deliver tangible environmental benefits while generating lasting socioeconomic outcomes through strong community engagement. Innovative initiatives from other areas of Papua New Guinea may also be considered where they demonstrate significant conservation value and strong potential for replication, scaling, or policy influence. Grants of up to USD 75,000 are available, with funding levels determined by project scope and anticipated impact.

Eligibility

Eligible applicants include community-based organizations, civil society organizations, Indigenous Peoples organizations, local and national non-governmental organizations, community associations, cooperatives, faith-based organizations engaged in environmental activities, and women’s and youth organizations operating in Papua New Guinea. Applicants must be legally registered or be able to demonstrate recognized community legitimacy and effective governance structures. Proposed projects should align with the programme’s thematic priorities and, where applicable, its priority landscapes. Applications must demonstrate meaningful consultation with and support from the target communities. During the assessment process, proposals will be evaluated on their environmental impact, level of community participation, sustainability of outcomes, innovation, and potential for replication, scaling, or policy influence. The application deadline is 15 November 2026. Applicants should refer to the official Call for Proposals and application template for detailed submission requirements and procedures.

Deadline Date: November 18, 2026
