CFAs: Managing Multi-Internationally Designated Areas

About

The Global Research and Training Centre for Internationally Designated Areas (GCIDA), ICCROM and IUCN through the World Heritage Leadership Programme are offering a specialised course to strengthen the management systems of heritage sites with multiple international designations.

The course focuses on enhancing understanding of managing Multi-Internationally Designated Areas (MIDAs), particularly World Heritage properties that are also recognised as Biosphere Reserves, UNESCO Global Geoparks, and Ramsar Sites, while addressing the differences in objectives and purposes across these international designations and supporting integrated management approaches for stronger and more adaptive heritage systems.

Participants will gain practical tools and knowledge, including training on the Enhancing Our Heritage Toolkit 2.0, which supports the assessment of management effectiveness. This enables professionals to evaluate existing systems, identify gaps, and strengthen conservation strategies for MIDAs through improved planning and implementation.

Eligibility

Selected participants will not be required to pay any course fee. Limited travel scholarships are available for participants from Africa, Asia, and the Pacific, covering round-trip travel and visa costs, while accommodation, meals, and local transportation during the course will be fully provided by the organisers.

The course will bring together around 20 participants from the Republic of Korea, Asia and the Pacific, and Africa. Eligible applicants include representatives from site management offices, protected area agencies, institutions, organisations, heritage professionals, and community members involved in managing World Heritage properties that also hold at least one additional international designation such as Biosphere Reserves, UNESCO Global Geoparks, or Ramsar Sites. Only sites with two or more international designations are considered eligible.
