Call for Livelihood and Economic Empowerment for Refugees in Botswana
About
The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) is inviting applications to support livelihood and economic empowerment initiatives that strengthen self-reliance among refugees, asylum-seekers, and stateless persons in Botswana. This call prioritizes community-driven solutions that enhance economic inclusion through activities such as skills development and vocational training, micro-enterprise creation, entrepreneurship support, income-generating initiatives, agricultural and food security projects, digital and financial inclusion, and market access and value chain development. Special emphasis is placed on empowering women and youth to achieve sustainable economic participation.
Aligned with UNHCR’s mandate to uphold international protection and promote durable solutions, the program seeks to identify and support Refugee-Led Organizations implementing or expanding livelihood activities. It fosters inclusive, innovative, and locally owned approaches that strengthen community resilience and socio-economic opportunities. The initiative contributes to protection and assistance through national systems while promoting empowerment and long-term self-reliance. The indicative budget for this call is USD 49,504, with projects expected to deliver measurable outcomes such as improved livelihoods, increased access to national development opportunities, and strengthened economic inclusion for displaced populations.
Eligibility
Applications are open exclusively to Refugee-Led Organizations operating in Botswana. Eligible applicants must demonstrate capacity to implement or expand livelihood and self-reliance initiatives that align with UNHCR’s community-based protection frameworks and localization strategies. Proposals will be evaluated on their ability to deliver inclusive, innovative, and sustainable solutions that promote economic empowerment, with particular attention to initiatives targeting women and youth. Consideration will also be given to the extent of local ownership, alignment with national systems, and accountability to affected populations.
