The Centenary Research Award provides major funding to support innovative research projects that address significant animal welfare challenges or explore fundamental questions in animal welfare science. Projects must demonstrate strong potential to improve animal welfare outcomes, scientific novelty, and methodological rigour, while also contributing to the career development of participating researchers. Funding of up to £250,000 (approximately $317,500) is available to cover salaries and research costs for projects lasting between two and four years, with an anticipated start date in late 2027 or early 2028. The award does not typically cover university overheads, and applicants must provide both summary and detailed budgets at different stages of the process.

Eligibility

Applications are open worldwide to researchers affiliated with recognized research institutes or organizations capable of hosting the project and administering funds. Co‑funded projects are welcome but not required. Proposals will undergo peer review, and shortlisted applicants may be invited to interviews before final selection. The successful applicant is expected to be announced by the end of August 2027.
