The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Viet Nam, on behalf of UNCTAD, invites applications from qualified national consulting entities to conduct a field-based quantitative survey of the arabica coffee value chain in Dien Bien and Son La provinces, Viet Nam. The assignment aims to generate evidence on the economic and environmental sustainability of arabica coffee production and trade, with a particular focus on opportunities and challenges related to traceability systems and their role in promoting sustainable and inclusive value chains.

The survey will collect and analyze both primary and secondary data covering coffee production, trade flows, value chain structures, certification systems, pricing mechanisms, access to inputs and services, risk management practices, grower incomes, profitability, and socioeconomic conditions. It will also assess environmental sustainability issues, including climate resilience, deforestation-free compliance, and the ecological impacts of agricultural inputs. In addition, the study will establish baseline information on current traceability practices, identify barriers to traceability adoption, examine potential equity gaps, and explore opportunities for developing inclusive national traceability systems. Findings from the survey will support subsequent project activities and contribute to a broader UNCTAD regional study examining traceability and sustainability in arabica coffee value chains across Viet Nam, Lao PDR, and Thailand. The selected firm will work under the direct supervision of the country project officer and the overall guidance of UNCTAD’s Agricultural Commodities Section. No grant amount or project duration has been specified in the call.

Eligibility

Applicants must be qualified consultancy firms, research institutes, or organizations with the technical capacity to design and implement large-scale quantitative surveys and conduct value chain research. Eligible applicants should demonstrate expertise in agricultural commodity analysis, socioeconomic and environmental research, data collection and field survey implementation, and stakeholder engagement across agricultural value chains. Experience in coffee sector studies, sustainability assessments, traceability systems, certification schemes, rural livelihoods, or related trade and development research will be considered an advantage. Proposals will be evaluated based on the applicant’s technical qualifications, relevant organizational experience, methodological approach, capacity to undertake fieldwork in the target provinces, and ability to deliver high-quality data and analysis that supports the objectives of the assignment.
