Open Call: Growth, Engagement and Resources Grant Program
About
The Growth, Engagement and Resources (GEAR) grant offered by the East Coast Zoological Foundation supports conservation-focused organizations by funding essential operational needs for in-situ fieldwork.
The program focuses on three key areas: field equipment to support monitoring, surveying, and assessment of species and habitats; outreach initiatives aimed at public engagement through educational and awareness activities; and professional development opportunities that enhance organizational capacity through training, workshops, conferences, and related support costs such as travel and housing.
GEAR is designed as a small but impactful funding opportunity that helps conservation organizations address financial gaps not typically covered by larger project-based grants. By supporting operational costs, the program aims to act as a catalyst for organizational growth and development, enabling groups to strengthen their fieldwork capabilities and overall effectiveness.
While funding requests are generally expected to be up to $1,000, larger requests may be considered or partially funded depending on the circumstances. Successful applicants are required to utilize the funds within a 12-month period and submit a brief report at the end of that timeframe.
Eligibility
Eligibility for the grant extends to 501(c)(3) non-profit organizations or their equivalents, as well as governmental and non-governmental organizations that are actively engaged in direct in-situ conservation efforts. Applicants must apply under only one category at a time and are not eligible to receive the grant more than once within the same calendar year. Certain expenses such as unspecified overhead, administrative costs, salaries, and vehicles are not eligible, although off-road vehicles may be considered on a case-by-case basis.
All requested items must be clearly justified, demonstrating a direct link to the organization’s mission and activities, as well as how the support will contribute to its growth. Priority is given to organizations that can show evidence of development and a pathway toward greater self-reliance.
