RFPs: LEO Foundation Research International Grant Program
About
The LEO Foundation Research Grants Program (LFRG) 2027 supports investigator-initiated research projects that advance knowledge and innovation in dermatology. The program funds high-quality basic, translational, technical, epidemiological, and clinical research aimed at improving understanding of skin biology, uncovering the mechanisms underlying dermatological diseases and their symptoms, and addressing clinical challenges faced by individuals at risk of or living with skin diseases. Particular emphasis is placed on independent academic research free from commercial interests. Priority areas include studies on skin biology, medicinal, biological, chemical, and pharmacological mechanisms of skin diseases, as well as research examining quality of life impacts and societal costs associated with dermatological conditions. Projects focused on skin cancer, aesthetic or cosmetic dermatology, commercial drug testing, or research involving commercial companies are not supported. Grants typically range from DKK 2-4 million (approximately USD 280,000-560,000) for projects lasting 1 to 3 years. Funding may cover personnel salaries, operating expenses, research equipment, publication costs, travel and conference participation, PhD tuition fees, and administrative expenses of up to 5%. The program is open to non-profit research institutions worldwide, with funding intended to strengthen global dermatology research capacity and scientific impact.
Eligibility
Applicants must hold a PhD degree or equivalent qualification, serve as the Principal Investigator, and be affiliated with a university, hospital, or other non-profit organization. Researchers from any country may apply; however, only one application may be submitted per applicant in each funding round. Applicants currently holding an active LEO Foundation Research Grant or Dr Abildgaard Fellowship are eligible to apply only during the final year of their existing grant period, and any newly awarded grant cannot commence before the current grant has ended. Applications are expected to demonstrate scientific excellence, a clear research strategy, appropriate team expertise, access to adequate research resources, and meaningful potential impact on the field of dermatology. Required submission materials include a scientific abstract, project background and methodology, references, significance and impact statement, team and institutional resource information, a lay summary, a short CV and publication list for the main applicant, an overview of current external funding, and one-page CVs for all funded project team members. Resubmission cover letters and project illustrations must be provided where applicable.
