The AI-First Frontier Research Grants program by the Foresight Institute supports transformative projects at the intersection of artificial intelligence and frontier sciences, including nanotechnology, neuroscience, and longevity. The initiative seeks to accelerate progress in areas where scientific advancement is constrained, leveraging AI-first approaches to overcome bottlenecks and enable breakthroughs with global impact. Priority is given to projects applying AI to nanoscale design, simulation, and assembly, as well as the development of closed-loop fabrication and characterization tools. In neuroscience, the program supports whole-brain emulation and enabling technologies such as advanced brain mapping, neurobiological data integration, and scalable behavioral modeling. In longevity research, it encourages innovative work on tissue and organ replacement, biostasis, genetic analysis, and strategies to extend healthy human lifespan. Grants typically range from USD 30,000 to 100,000, with higher awards for projects in the main focus areas. Funding may be disbursed in lump sums or tranches for multi-year projects, and overhead costs up to 10% of direct research expenses are eligible if directly supporting the funded work. All funded outputs, including code and data, must be open-sourced.

Eligibility

Applications are open worldwide to individuals, teams, and organizations from both non-profit and for-profit sectors. Proposals must demonstrate alignment with the program’s focus areas, clear potential to reduce existential risks from AI, feasibility within short AGI timelines, and the capacity to execute high-risk, high-reward projects. Submissions are evaluated for fit, impact, feasibility, and the ability to deliver concrete milestones within one to three years. Successful applicants must pass due diligence checks and agree to basic reporting requirements.
