The General Project Funding program supports large‑scale, innovative projects across all artistic disciplines, including visual and performing arts, literature, music, dance, film, photography, architecture, and new media. Projects must demonstrate a strong international dimension while ensuring visibility within Germany. The Foundation allocates up to €10 million annually, with funding decisions made twice a year following jury sessions in May and November. Grants are awarded as partial financing, with a minimum request of €50,000, and projects must secure at least 20% of their total costs through personal or third‑party contributions. Supported activities include ambitious, cross‑border cultural initiatives that highlight artistic innovation and foster international exchange. Projects may not begin before the relevant jury meeting, and all funded media must include a German‑language version. The program does not cover operational costs, purchases, construction, projects limited to printing expenses, or guest performances abroad. Regularly recurring projects are generally excluded, except in special cases designated as “cultural beacons” with approval from the Board of Trustees.

Eligibility

Applications are open to institutions headquartered in Germany or abroad, regardless of legal form, provided they are firmly established organizations. Individual applicants or informal groups are not eligible unless affiliated with an established institution. All applications must be submitted online in German using the Foundation’s digital tools, with complete and timely forms and confirmations. The Foundation conducts a preliminary review and notifies applicants of the outcome. Funding is subject to strict contractual and reporting requirements, including proof of expenditure and compliance with German budgetary law.
