Apply Now: Small Grant for Media Organisations (Malaysia)
About
The Small Grant for Media Organisations seeks to strengthen independent journalism in Malaysia by supporting coverage of business, human rights, and environmental (BHR+E) issues. The program aims to increase youth engagement with BHR+E topics, enhance the role of media professionals in gender-responsive reporting, and foster dialogue between journalists and youth through national and regional discussions.
The grant will fund the production of a three-part data storytelling series on corporate accountability and climate change in Malaysia. Projects should highlight successful initiatives, policies, and community-led actions, while amplifying the voices of underrepresented communities affected by business-related environmental challenges. Innovative approaches such as long-form and visual storytelling, short documentaries, video series, and data-driven journalism are encouraged, with a clear dissemination plan.
Funding of up to USD 35,000 will be provided to one civil society organisation. Projects must align with Malaysia’s National Action Plan on Business and Human Rights (2025–2030) and include a detailed storyboard, preliminary sources, methodology, and risk assessment addressing political, legal, or safety concerns.
Eligibility
Applications are open to non-governmental and independent media-focused civil society organisations registered in Malaysia with at least three years of active work promoting independent, quality journalism. Unregistered media collectives or informal groups may also apply if partnered with an eligible registered organisation serving as the lead applicant and grant recipient.
Applicants must demonstrate proven experience in producing high-quality, in-depth journalism on environmental or social issues, supported by at least three examples of similar projects completed in the past three years. Proposals must focus on corporate accountability in relation to environmental or climate change issues, be relevant to the local or regional context, and promote constructive advocacy approaches to business, human rights, and the environment.
