Submit Applications for Conservation Grants Program
About
The Paul Mellon Centre’s Conservation Grants program supports organizations undertaking original and innovative conservation research to protect and preserve significant works of British art, visual culture, and architecture. Funding is available for projects involving technical analysis, conservation research, and digitisation of resources, provided the items are in public or charitable ownership and accessible to the public. Grants of up to £25,000 are offered to cover eligible costs such as replacement staff, freelancer fees, research travel, transportation and packing, and specialist equipment, materials, or software. Projects must include a detailed budget and timeline, with outcomes expected within five years of award. No more than 33% of the total budget may be allocated to equipment, with the majority directed toward staff costs. Collaborative applications are encouraged, with one organization serving as the lead applicant.
Eligibility
Applications are open to organizations, institutions, nonprofits, and other entities with a dedicated business account, including internationally based organizations. Applicants must demonstrate how their project contributes to conservation research and provide project details, budget, timeline, and referee information through the application process. Collaborative proposals are permitted, but a lead applicant must be designated. Applications undergo a two-stage review: initial assessment by a subcommittee of the Paul Mellon Centre Advisory Council, followed by final evaluation by the full Advisory Council. Funding decisions are communicated after completion of the review process.
