About

The Support for Overseas Japanese Language Education Institutions (SOJLEI) Grant 2027 provides partial financial assistance to overseas institutions and organizations engaged in Japanese language education in countries where the Japan Foundation does not maintain an overseas office, as well as in Cambodia, Laos, and Russia. The program aims to strengthen and expand Japanese language education by supporting activities that promote the Japanese language and contribute to the development of Japanese language education systems and capacities. Grants support a portion of project implementation costs but do not cover salaries. Funded activities must be carried out during the Japan Foundation’s 2027 fiscal year, with implementation beginning between 1 April 2027 and 31 March 2028 and lasting up to 12 months. The grant is intended for activities that advance Japanese language learning, teaching, and educational development within the eligible geographic areas. Grant size is not specified; funding is provided on a partial-cost basis for approved project expenses.

Eligibility

Applicants must be overseas Japanese language education institutions or organizations, including teacher associations and academic societies. Individual applicants are not eligible. Japanese national and local government agencies, organizations established by such agencies without independent legal personality, foreign governments (except educational, research, and cultural institutions), diplomatic missions, and international organizations to which Japan provides contributions are not eligible to apply. Applicants must demonstrate the organizational and operational capacity to successfully implement the proposed project, ensure that receipt of Japan Foundation funding complies with applicable local laws and regulations, and possess or be capable of opening a bank account for grant disbursement. Applications will be assessed based on the applicant’s eligibility, project implementation capability, and compliance with the program’s administrative and legal requirements.
