Funding Available for Climate and Weather Innovation Program

Grant Size $500,000 to $1 million   ,   Closing Date

About

The Advanced Research Invention Agency (ARIA) invites proposals for “Opportunity Seeds” to support early-stage, high-risk research that explores innovative pathways for climate adaptation and resilience. The program focuses on three priority areas: carbon dioxide removal through novel approaches to accelerate atmospheric drawdown, extreme weather forecasting to strengthen preparedness for high-impact events, and new ideas related to solar geoengineering. Proposals that aim to alter Earth’s surface temperature through changes in planetary albedo, incoming solar radiation, or atmospheric emissivity are excluded, as these are covered under a separate program.

Opportunity Seed projects are designed to enable bold, curiosity-driven or near-commercial ideas that can challenge existing assumptions and open new technological pathways in climate and weather science. Funding ranges from £10,000 to £500,000 per project (inclusive of VAT and all associated costs), with durations of up to three years and no minimum requirement. The initiative seeks to empower diverse actors across the research and development ecosystem, from individuals and students to universities, research institutions, companies, charities, and public sector organizations.

Eligibility

Applicants may include individuals (with or without organizational affiliation), students, academic staff, universities, research institutions, companies of all sizes, charities, and public sector organizations. Priority is given to applicants based in the United Kingdom or those committing to conduct more than 50% of project activities within the UK. International applicants may be considered in exceptional cases where the proposed work is expected to deliver significant benefit to the United Kingdom. Proposals will be evaluated based on originality, potential to challenge existing paradigms, and capacity to advance climate adaptation and resilience.
