Call for Project: GEF-SGP Operational Phase 8 (Nigeria)
About
The Global Environmental Facility Small Grants Programme (GEF-SGP) in Nigeria, implemented by the United Nations Development Programme, is inviting eligible organisations to submit project concepts under Operational Phase 8 to support community-driven environmental and livelihood initiatives.
The primary objective of Operational Phase 8 is to catalyse local actions that address environmental degradation while promoting sustainable development and improved livelihoods, with a focus on piloting innovative environmental solutions, enhancing well-being and livelihoods through inclusive and sustainable income generation, scaling successful community-based initiatives, building resilience by linking local efforts to global environmental benefits, and strengthening policy advocacy for inclusive development; projects must align with key GEF focal areas including biodiversity conservation, climate change mitigation and adaptation, land degradation, international waters, and chemicals and waste management.
The programme has been active in Nigeria since 2009 and has supported over 220 community initiatives across 31 states through collaboration with more than 150 civil society organisations. It is grounded in the principle that global environmental challenges can be effectively addressed through grassroots action, combining financial and technical support to empower local communities.
