CFPs: Evaluating Scalability and Impact of GenAI and Agentic AI in the Water and Wastewater Sector
About
The Water Research Foundation invites proposals for a research initiative aimed at assessing the scalability, reproducibility, and impact of Generative AI and Agentic AI in the water and wastewater sector.
The project focuses on helping utilities overcome barriers to adopting Generative AI and Agentic AI by establishing guardrails such as cybersecurity integration, secure model development, and applying AI risk management frameworks, while also piloting and expanding key GenAI applications with documented insights and impacts.
It also includes cataloguing existing Agentic AI uses and reproducing a low-effort application at another utility to capture lessons learned and support wider adoption.
This funding opportunity offers up to $200,000 to support innovative research that advances the application of emerging AI technologies in water management systems. The initiative is part of the Water Research Foundation’s broader efforts to address evolving challenges in the sector through scientifically credible and coordinated research programs.
The Water Research Foundation, a nonprofit organization, plays a key role in advancing water science to improve the quality of life for communities by funding and managing research on drinking water, wastewater, reuse, and stormwater systems. Its work supports the development of technologies and operational practices that enhance water quality and service delivery.
Eligibility
This project is supported under the Emerging Opportunities Research Program, which is designed to fund time-sensitive and high-priority research topics relevant to the water sector. The program also enables collaboration with partner organizations and supports innovative ideas that address urgent challenges faced by utilities.
Applicants must prepare and submit their proposals through the designated online portal, ensuring all required documents are properly compiled and submitted before the deadline of May 20, 2026. Proposals exceeding the specified funding limit will not be considered.
