The AMBSO Impact Research Initiative (AMBSO-IRI) 2025 supports innovative early-stage research, proof-of-concept studies, and pilot projects that address priority health challenges and generate evidence to inform policy and practice across Africa and beyond. The initiative seeks bold and impactful research that can strengthen health systems, improve population health outcomes, reduce health risks, and contribute to scalable, evidence-based solutions. Funding is available for projects focused on infectious diseases and global health security, including antimicrobial resistance and epidemic preparedness, artificial intelligence applications in healthcare, HIV/AIDS epidemiological research, climate change and health, cancer research, maternal, child and adolescent health, non-communicable diseases including mental health, and healthy aging. Successful applicants may receive grants of up to USD 10,000 to support direct research activities such as protocol development, ethical and regulatory approvals, data collection, community engagement, technical support, and data management. Projects must be completed within a maximum implementation period of 18 months, with funding provided only for the approved project duration and no provision for continuation or renewal support.

The call is open to researchers, academic institutions, and research organizations worldwide. Doctoral students are encouraged to participate as members of a research team led by a faculty Principal Investigator. Applications from for-profit entities, political organizations, and lobbying groups are not eligible for funding. Proposals should demonstrate innovation, address priority health challenges, and show strong potential to generate actionable evidence that can inform effective interventions, policy development, and scalable health solutions.
