The Paul Mellon Centre’s Research Project Grants support organisations undertaking ambitious and sustained research initiatives that advance the study of British art, visual culture, and architecture. The program provides up to £40,000 to cover eligible research‑related expenses, including staffing (researchers, curators, freelancers, assistant curators), equipment, materials, workshops, travel, and meeting costs. Projects must demonstrate a clear contribution to defined research objectives or form part of a wider initiative, with outcomes expected within five years of the award. Applicants are required to submit a realistic budget, detailed project plan, and timeline through the Centre’s application system. Collaborative applications are welcome, and successful recipients must acknowledge the Centre’s support in all project materials and submit a final report within three months of completing the award term.

Applications are open to organisations, institutions, nonprofits, and other entities with a dedicated business account, including internationally based organisations. Each organisation may submit only one application per funding round. Proposals must include project details, budget, timeline, and referee information. Applications are assessed through a two‑stage process: initial review by a subcommittee of the Paul Mellon Centre Advisory Council, followed by final evaluation by the full Advisory Council. Previous project performance may be considered during assessment, and only shortlisted applications proceed to the final stage.
