The European Cross-border Grants (ECG) programme supports collaborative investigative journalism projects that strengthen independent reporting and promote cross-border collaboration across Europe. Since 2009, the programme has funded professional journalists and media organisations working together on investigations of strong public interest and relevance to European audiences.

The grants provide a total budget of €1,680,000, distributed across six application rounds—four in 2026 and two in 2027—with €280,000 available per call. Funding covers costs directly linked to journalistic research, including travel, translation, access to paid databases, and working time for journalists. Fixed costs such as office expenses, equipment, and production costs are excluded. Applicants are encouraged to minimize unnecessary travel to ensure efficient use of resources and reduce environmental impact.

Projects must involve collaborative cross-border investigations covering at least two countries and result in publication by at least two professional news outlets in different European countries. Supported activities include investigative research, original journalism, innovative methods, expert-reviewed reporting, media partnerships, freedom of information requests, legal screening, insurance, and multi-country publication. While proposals on all themes are welcome, projects primarily focused on environmental investigations should apply through the dedicated Investigation Grants for Environmental Journalism programme.

Eligible applicants include professional freelance journalists and legally established media organisations from at least two different European countries. Team members from outside Europe may participate when required by the investigation, provided that at least 80% of the requested budget supports journalists or media organisations based in EU member states. Students are not eligible, and media organisations must have been legally incorporated for at least one year before the application deadline.

Applications must include letters of intent from at least two professional news outlets in different European countries confirming their commitment to publish the investigation. Previous recipients of Journalismfund Europe grants may reapply, with prior project performance considered during evaluation.
