The U.S. Embassy Bujumbura invites proposals for the Public Diplomacy Bujumbura Small Grants Program, designed to advance U.S. public diplomacy goals through sports, health, and cultural engagement. The program emphasizes the Decade of Sport, promoting health and well-being, strengthening people-to-people ties, and showcasing American leadership in basketball. It seeks to increase awareness of mental and physical health in sports while fostering lasting connections between U.S. sports diplomacy networks and local communities.

Funding supports projects that align with U.S. policy objectives of making the United States safer, stronger, and more prosperous, while promoting Freedom250 values. Activities should engage youth, young professionals, emerging voices, and opinion leaders through sports and cultural programming. Eligible initiatives may include academic and professional lectures, seminars, speaker programs, artistic and cultural workshops, joint performances, exhibitions, and professional or academic exchanges. Basketball-centered projects—such as clinics, coaching workshops, tournaments, and collaborations with American athletes or coaches—are strongly encouraged, alongside health modules addressing mental wellness, physical fitness, nutrition, and injury prevention.

Projects must be completed within 12 months. Individual awards range from $5,000 to $25,000, with a total funding pool of $25,000, subject to availability of funds.

Eligible applicants include not-for-profit organizations, civil society organizations, think tanks, public and private educational institutions, public international organizations, and governmental institutions. Proposals will be evaluated based on alignment with program objectives, feasibility within the 12-month timeframe, and potential for sustainable impact. Applicants must demonstrate capacity to implement activities effectively and responsibly manage U.S. government funds.
