Education Cannot Wait (ECW) is launching a pilot programme in Ethiopia to tackle energy poverty, climate change, and education financing by deploying clean cooking solutions and climate mitigation activities in schools. With 90% of Ethiopia’s population lacking access to clean cooking and school feeding programmes expanding rapidly, the initiative seeks to demonstrate how school-based interventions can generate measurable carbon credits and unlock new sources of climate finance for education.

The programme will generate high-quality, tradeable carbon credits under internationally recognized standards such as Gold Standard, with the long-term goal of qualifying credits as Internationally Transferred Mitigation Outcomes (ITMOs) under Article 6.2 of the Paris Agreement. Implementation will occur over 24 months in three phases: feasibility assessments and pilot design, deployment of clean cooking technologies and mitigation actions in at least 60 schools across two regions, and scale-up activities with Article 6.2 stakeholders.

Selected partners will undertake stakeholder mapping, baseline surveys, technology selection, project registration, monitoring and verification frameworks, and inclusive community engagement. The programme emphasizes co-benefits including improved air quality, reduced health burdens, and enhanced learning environments, particularly for women and children. The maximum project size is USD 2.5 million, with a maximum duration of 24 months.

Applicants must be legally registered entities in Ethiopia with a minimum of five years of operational history. They must demonstrate experience managing large-scale education or energy programmes, maintain operational presence in at least two regions, and have a proven track record in carbon crediting and school-based interventions. Adherence to gender equity, social inclusion, and child safeguarding standards is mandatory.
