The Turtle Conservation Fund (TCF) administers a global grants program dedicated to the conservation and research of highly endangered tortoises and freshwater turtles, excluding marine species. Since its inception in 2003, TCF has awarded over USD 1.69 million to 395 projects addressing urgent conservation needs. Grants typically range from USD 1,000 to 5,000 per project, with either partial or full support depending on project costs. Funding priority is given to species listed as Critically Endangered or Endangered on the IUCN Red List or provisionally assessed by the IUCN Tortoise and Freshwater Turtle Specialist Group. Secondary focus is placed on species assessed as Data Deficient, Not Evaluated, or with outdated Red List assessments that may warrant higher threat classification. Award recipients enter into contractual agreements with Re:wild or the Chelonian Research Foundation, which serve as TCF’s financial umbrella organizations. Grantees are encouraged to publish research outcomes in Chelonian Conservation and Biology, the international scientific journal dedicated to turtle conservation. TCF operates two funding cycles annually, with average disbursements of USD 40,000–100,000 per year.

Applications are open to individuals and organizations undertaking conservation or research projects focused on tortoises and freshwater turtles that are highly threatened, provisionally assessed as endangered, or require updated conservation status. Eligible species include those classified as Critically Endangered, Endangered, Data Deficient, Not Evaluated, or outdated assessments on the IUCN Red List or TFTSG provisional lists. Proposals must demonstrate clear conservation impact and scientific merit. TCF does not fund marine turtle projects and is unlikely to support proposals concerning the Mojave Desert Tortoise (Gopherus agassizii), for which applicants are advised to seek funding from the Desert Tortoise Council. Applicants must commit to contractual agreements with Re:wild or Chelonian Research Foundation and are encouraged to disseminate research findings through peer-reviewed publications.
