RFAs: Research on Manganese Behaviour in Drinking Water Systems

The Water Research Foundation (WRF) invites proposals to advance scientific understanding of manganese (Mn) behavior, accumulation, and release in drinking water distribution and premise plumbing systems. This project will characterize spatial and temporal variability in Mn concentrations and speciation, and examine their interactions with water chemistry, corrosion control treatments, and complexing agents. Research will assess the implications of Mn occurrence, stability, and release, including mobilization of long-term legacy deposits under chemical, hydraulic, and biological influences. The study will also evaluate mitigation strategies such as corrosion control treatments and operational practices like flushing and maintenance. Outcomes will include recommendations for monitoring strategies to identify system-specific risks, detect Mn accumulation, and support responses to anticipated regulatory changes. Applicants may request up to $400,000 in WRF funding, with an expected project duration aligned to the scope of research activities.

Proposals are accepted from U.S.-based and non-U.S.-based entities, including educational institutions, research organizations, governmental agencies, consultants, and other for-profit organizations. All applicants must comply with WRF’s Timeliness Policy: researchers who are late on ongoing WRF-sponsored studies without approved no-cost extensions are not eligible to be named participants in proposals.
