The Water Research Foundation (WRF) invites proposals to advance the monitoring and management of trifluoroacetic acid (TFA) and related ultrashort-chain organofluorine substances targeted under the Sixth Unregulated Contaminant Monitoring Rule (UCMR 6). Serving U.S. drinking water utilities, regulatory bodies, and the public as key end-beneficiaries, this initiative aims to fill critical knowledge gaps surrounding the prevalence and behavior of these emerging contaminants across diverse water supply networks nationwide. Supported activities include sampling and characterizing the occurrence of TFA and ultrashort-chain organofluorine compounds in representative drinking water systems, evaluating the performance of existing full-scale water treatment technologies in reducing or removing these compounds, and formulating practical response and communication protocols to assist utilities in managing and reporting detection events. WRF will award up to $200,000 in funding for a single project spanning an anticipated 12-month performance period, with matching in-kind contributions welcomed though not mandatory.

This funding opportunity is open to both U.S. and international entities, including accredited higher education institutions, research institutes, governmental agencies, consultancies, and for-profit commercial enterprises with relevant research capabilities. Proposals must demonstrate technical expertise and operational capacity to execute the stated objectives within the 12-month timeframe. Investigators currently leading active WRF-funded projects who are past due on contractual deliverables without an approved, formal no-cost extension are strictly ineligible to apply as principal investigators or project team members. Evaluation will prioritize applications demonstrating sound methodological rigor, practical applicability for water utilities, and credible research partnerships.
