The Water Research Foundation (WRF) is inviting proposals for a research project focused on evaluating alternative biofouling control chemicals and operational strategies in potable water reuse treatment trains. The initiative aims to improve treatment system performance while maintaining high finished-water quality by identifying and assessing approaches that reduce membrane fouling, lower differential pressure, decrease cleaning frequency, minimize ultraviolet transmittance (UVT) degradation, and reduce overall lifecycle costs. The research will examine impacts on membrane efficiency and lifespan, UV advanced oxidation process performance, energy consumption, finished-water quality, concentrate management, and associated operational and environmental tradeoffs. The study is also expected to quantify lifecycle benefits and costs, including chemical and energy use, membrane replacement and cleaning requirements, monitoring and reporting needs, operator safety considerations, and capital and operational expenditures. WRF will provide funding of up to USD 400,000 for a single project, with an anticipated implementation period of 24 to 36 months from the contract start date. The opportunity has a global scope and supports applied research that advances potable water reuse technologies and operational practices.

Applications are open to both U.S.-based and international entities, including educational institutions, research organizations, governmental agencies, consulting firms, and other for-profit organizations. Applicants must demonstrate the technical capacity and expertise required to conduct advanced water treatment and reuse research. Proposals will be assessed based on their scientific merit, relevance to the project objectives, potential contribution to improving potable water reuse treatment performance, and ability to generate actionable findings for the water sector. Researchers who are currently late in delivering ongoing WRF-sponsored studies and do not have an approved no-cost extension are not eligible to participate in this funding opportunity.
