The Italian Agency for Development Cooperation (AICS) invites proposals to strengthen climate-smart water resources management and enhance community resilience in Ethiopia’s priority hydrographic basins. The programme aims to improve drought resilience and reduce vulnerability to climate change through integrated water resources management (IWRM) in the Awash, Wabi Shebele, and Danakil basins. Key objectives include strengthening technical capacity at federal, basin, and sub-basin levels; supporting basin plan development; improving integrated information systems and data utilization; enhancing institutional coordination; and increasing community awareness of climate-smart IWRM.

The initiative also promotes livelihoods and environmental rehabilitation through Nature-based Solutions (NbS), including site-specific interventions for water quality improvement and land restoration. Community capacity-building for sustainable management and maintenance of NbS interventions, as well as monitoring and evaluation of implemented activities, are integral components. Selected interventions will be implemented collaboratively with public authorities and local communities through participatory processes.

The total indicative funding available under this call is EUR 2,000,000. Lot A (Awash Basin) offers grants ranging from EUR 900,000 to EUR 1,000,000, while Lot B (Wabi Shebele Basin) provides funding within the same range.

Eligible applicants must be legal, non-profit entities such as non-governmental organizations. The lead applicant must be established in an eligible country, registered with the FDRE Authority for Civil Society Organizations in Ethiopia for at least three years prior to the call, and directly operational in the project area during the same period. Applicants must demonstrate prior experience implementing eligible actions and have successfully managed at least one project with a budget of EUR 700,000 or more within the last three years.

The lead applicant is responsible for preparing and managing the proposed action in collaboration with co-applicants and affiliated entities. Proposals must comply with requirements related to eligible actors, actions, and costs, and will be evaluated based on technical capacity, relevance of proposed interventions, and alignment with programme priorities.
