RFPs: Comparison of PFAS Contributions to Agricultural Systems Grant

The Water Research Foundation (WRF) invites applications for research projects aimed at improving understanding of how per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) enter agricultural systems through various agricultural inputs. The program seeks to generate scientific evidence that supports risk-based decision making in agriculture and water resource management by comparing PFAS contributions from biosolids and other agricultural sources, including manures, composts, fertilizers, pesticides, seed coatings, irrigation water, and atmospheric deposition. Research should evaluate PFAS concentrations in these inputs, assess their influence on soil and plant contamination over time, examine PFAS fate and transport at the field scale, and determine the relative contribution of different sources to agricultural environments. Eligible activities include literature reviews, analytical method evaluations, measurement of compound-specific PFAS concentrations, field sampling, data analysis, and development of practical resources to support stakeholders. Expected outputs include a final research report, knowledge-sharing activities such as a webcast or workshop, and optional decision-support tools. Projects may be implemented in any geographic location where the proposed research objectives can be achieved. WRF will provide funding of up to USD 400,000 per project, and the anticipated project duration is 36 months from the contract start date. The primary beneficiaries of the research include water utilities, farmers, regulators, policymakers, and other stakeholders responsible for managing PFAS-related risks in agricultural systems.

Applications are open to both U.S.-based and non-U.S.-based organizations, including educational institutions, research organizations, government agencies, consulting firms, and other for-profit entities with the capacity to conduct the proposed research. Applicants must provide a minimum contribution equivalent to 33% of the requested WRF funding through cash cost share, in-kind contributions, or third-party in-kind support. Proposals will be assessed on their scientific quality, relevance to program objectives, methodological rigor, ability to generate reliable and actionable data, consideration of environmental and management factors affecting PFAS behavior, and potential to inform practical risk management and policy decisions. Applicants should demonstrate the technical expertise, resources, and project management capacity necessary to successfully deliver the required research outcomes and project deliverables within the specified timeframe.
