The Biocodex Microbiota Foundation invites international research proposals under its 2026 Women’s Health International Grant, focusing on male-female genital microbiome interactions and their impact on vaginal dysbiosis. This annual program supports both fundamental and clinical research exploring the role of microbiota in women’s health and disease.

The 2026 theme emphasizes microbial transmission dynamics, niche adaptation, and persistence of microbiota, with particular attention to bacterial vaginosis and treatment response. Eligible projects may investigate mechanisms of penile microbiome influence on vaginal dysbiosis, recurrence risks, and microbial community stability. Studies assessing interventions such as antibiotics, topical or systemic partner therapies, circumcision, or live biotherapeutic products are encouraged, provided they examine their impact on penile microbial ecology and female treatment outcomes.

The Foundation awards grants to institutions (universities, hospitals, and research centers) for projects lasting up to three years. Each project may receive annual funding of €200,000 to cover equipment, operational expenses, and staffing costs. Institutional overheads are capped at 10%. Funding is disbursed annually against approved budgets, with interim reporting required for multi-year projects.

Applications are open to MDs, PhDs, and Pharm-Ds specializing in gynecology, obstetrics, microbiology, infectious diseases, internal medicine, or oncology. There are no geographic restrictions, and researchers worldwide may apply. Proposals must include a detailed budget and timeline, with clinical studies requiring prior approval from an accredited ethics committee.

Researchers who have received a Women’s Health International Grant from the Biocodex Microbiota Foundation within the past three years are not eligible to reapply for the same award, though recipients of other BMF grants remain eligible. Members of the Women’s Health International Scientific Committee, as well as researchers from their laboratories, cannot apply as Principal Investigators. Committee members with conflicts of interest will be excluded from the review process.
