Open Call: Tarbell Institutional Grants for AI Journalism
من نحن
The Tarbell Institutional Grants program provides organizational funding to media outlets and journalism teams worldwide to build long-term capacity for ambitious reporting examining artificial intelligence and its broader societal impacts. Building upon Tarbell’s individual reporting grants established in late 2024, this initiative scales up financial support to distribute at least $10 million by the end of 2027. Grant funding ranges from $50,000 to over $500,000, with initial awards primarily structured around one-year project durations before transitioning toward default terms of two years or more. Eligible activities include foundational explainers and analysis, deep investigations into AI's transformative potential, accountability reporting on frontier AI companies, tracking lobbying and campaign financing, examining AI policy and developments in China, covering AI-related safety incidents, and assessing labor market transformations. Grantees retain full editorial control over all published content.
معايير القبول
Applicants must be established media outlets or dedicated journalism teams—including both nonprofit and for-profit organizations operating worldwide—that possess the institutional capacity to legally receive and manage grant funding. When applying, candidates must submit a comprehensive proposal outlining their requested funding amount, preferred project duration, a detailed budget, information on existing project funding, proposed team structures with clear role breakdowns, and current or projected audience reach alongside specific examples of the journalism they intend to produce. Proposals are evaluated based on the clarity of the planned activities, the strength and feasibility of the proposed budget, team qualifications, audience impact, and the overall journalistic merit of the work.
