The Early Career Patient-Oriented Diabetes Research Award supports investigators pursuing careers in diabetes-related clinical research and aims to facilitate their transition to independent faculty or research positions. The program funds patient-oriented clinical research focused on type 1 diabetes involving direct interaction with human participants. It is designed to strengthen clinical research capacity and promote high-quality diabetes-focused investigation with the potential to improve clinical outcomes. Awards provide up to USD 200,000 per year for a maximum of five years, inclusive of indirect costs capped at 10%. Up to USD 100,000 may be allocated to research-related expenses, including technician support, laboratory supplies, equipment, and travel costs of up to USD 2,000 annually. Eligible research activities may be conducted at domestic or international public or private, nonprofit or for-profit organizations.

Applications may be submitted by domestic and international nonprofit organizations, public and private universities and colleges, hospitals, laboratories, units of state or local government, and eligible federal agencies. Applicants are generally expected to hold an MD, MD-PhD, DO, or PsyD degree, maintain an appointment or joint appointment within a clinical department or subspecialty of clinical medicine, and conduct human clinical research. In exceptional cases, applicants without an MD may be considered if their work is expected to make a significant contribution to clinical outcomes. Applicants must have received their first faculty-level appointment within five years prior to the application deadline. Consideration may be given to applicants with documented career interruptions related to parenting responsibilities, caregiving, personal health issues, or COVID-19-related disruptions.
