The Japan Foundation invites overseas publishers to apply for the 2026 Support Program for Translation and Publication, which provides partial financial assistance for translating and publishing works originally written in Japanese. The program aims to foster international understanding of Japanese culture by supporting the dissemination of Japanese literature and nonfiction in the humanities and social sciences to global audiences. Eligible projects include translations of Japanese works already published in Japan, covering both fiction and nonfiction, with support available for costs such as paper, typesetting, platemaking, printing, and binding. E‑book publication projects are also accepted.

In FY 2026, average grant assistance was approximately JPY 618,000 (about USD 4,100), with 77 projects supported out of 125 applications. Supported projects must ensure publication between April 1, 2027, and February 29, 2028, or, for translation‑only support, within two years of translation completion. Translations should generally be made directly from the original Japanese text, with contracts for translation rights and with translators finalized at the time of application. Applications must include a portion of the draft translation (about 30 pages) and demonstrate a realistic and practical completion plan.

Applicants must be overseas publishers engaged in translation and publication activities. Projects intended for religious or political purposes, reprints, periodicals, exhibition catalogues, travel brochures, language dictionaries, Japanese‑language teaching materials, or works not intended for wide distribution are not eligible. Only projects with finalized translation rights and translator contracts at the time of application will be considered.
