The RELX Environmental Challenge 2026 invites individuals and organisations from both the not-for-profit and for-profit sectors to submit innovative early-stage projects focused on environmental sustainability and resilience.

The Challenge supports projects under two categories including Clean Water or Sanitation and Ocean-related innovation. Projects under the Clean Water or Sanitation category must advance sustainable access to safe water where it is at risk and improve access to sanitation, while Ocean category projects must support ocean health, marine ecosystems, or ocean-based solutions that contribute to environmental sustainability and resilience. All submissions are expected to be replicable, scalable, and sustainable, set a benchmark for innovation, demonstrate practical applicability, address non-discrimination and equity of access, involve and positively impact a range of stakeholders, and show strong local or community-level engagement.

As part of the 2026 edition marking 15 years of impact, the RELX Environmental Challenge has introduced an expanded prize structure with two separate awards of $75,000 each. One award will recognise a project focused on Clean Water or Sanitation, while the second award will support an Ocean-related innovation project. The initiative encourages practical solutions that address defined environmental needs and contribute to broader issues such as health, education, equity, and human rights.

The competition is open globally to both individuals and organisations working across not-for-profit and for-profit sectors. Early-stage projects are particularly encouraged, provided they demonstrate clear potential for practical implementation and long-term sustainability. Projects should also show strong engagement with local communities and stakeholders while promoting equitable access and inclusive impact.

The RELX Environmental Challenge aims to identify innovative environmental solutions that can be scaled and replicated to create lasting change. Through financial support and global recognition, the Challenge seeks to strengthen initiatives that improve access to safe water, sanitation, and ocean sustainability solutions around the world.
