The Wellcome Discovery Awards (DA) 2026 provide substantial funding to support established researchers and research teams in pursuing bold, innovative, and creative research that can transform understanding and advance methodologies across health-related fields. The programme encourages ambitious ideas with the potential to generate significant shifts in knowledge or to develop new conceptual frameworks, tools, techniques, and research methods that contribute to improving human life, health, and wellbeing. Research may be conducted in any discipline, including STEM, humanities, social sciences, clinical and allied health sciences, and public health, provided it has a clear relevance to health. Awards average £3.5 million, with larger requests considered where justified, and projects may be funded for up to eight years, with a typical duration of seven years. Funding supports research-related costs and, in specific circumstances, salary support for lead applicants based in eligible low- and middle-income countries. The scheme supports both individual-led and team-based projects and is open to applicants based in eligible institutions in the UK, the Republic of Ireland, and selected low- and middle-income countries.

Applicants must be established researchers applying either individually or as part of a research team, with teams typically comprising two to eight members. Applications must be submitted through an eligible administering organisation that is a not-for-profit entity, such as a higher education institution, research institute, healthcare organisation, charity, or social enterprise. Eligible administering organisations must be located in the United Kingdom, Republic of Ireland, or eligible low- and middle-income countries, excluding India and mainland China. All proposals must be formally endorsed and submitted by the administering organisation. Applications are assessed through a multi-stage process that includes organisational approval, shortlisting, external expert review, and interviews for shortlisted applicants. Strong proposals are expected to demonstrate originality, creativity, scientific or scholarly excellence, and the potential to make significant contributions to health-related research and understanding.
