The Water Research Foundation (WRF) invites proposals for a research project aimed at advancing the understanding of simultaneous nitrification/denitrification (SND) in biological nutrient removal processes. The project seeks to establish a clear definition of successful SND based on published and unpublished datasets, develop a framework identifying conditions where SND has succeeded or faced challenges, and characterize the operational, physical, and biological factors that influence performance. It will also evaluate microbial communities, assess the role of different carbon sources, and examine the accuracy and limitations of commonly used modeling software in predicting SND outcomes. Recommendations for improved modeling approaches and calibration methods are expected as key outputs. WRF will provide up to $250,000 in funding for this initiative, supporting projects that contribute to more effective nutrient removal strategies and sustainable water management practices.

Proposals are open to U.S.-based and international applicants, including educational institutions, research organizations, governmental agencies, consultants, and other for-profit entities. All participating researchers must comply with the WRF Timeliness Policy. Researchers who are late on ongoing WRF-sponsored studies without approved no-cost extensions are not eligible to be named participants in new proposals.
