The Animal Welfare Fund (AWF) provides grants to support high-impact interventions and research that improve the welfare of nonhuman animals worldwide, with particular emphasis on neglected species, underserved geographies, and underfunded advocacy approaches. Established as a pooled philanthropic fund, AWF directs resources toward cost-effective opportunities capable of generating meaningful and scalable improvements in animal well-being. Priority areas include efforts to end cage confinement through corporate engagement and policy advocacy, particularly in the Global South; advancing aquatic animal welfare through research, farm-level improvements, and humane slaughter practices for farmed fish and shrimp across Asia, Africa, and Latin America; protecting overlooked species such as invertebrates before industrial farming expands; researching strategies to reduce wild animal suffering; and strengthening the animal advocacy ecosystem through movement building, coordination, and core institutional support. Grants have historically ranged from USD 5,000 to USD 200,000, with average grant sizes expected to increase to approximately USD 500,000 during 2026–2027. Requests of USD 1 million or more are also accepted. Projects may support research, advocacy, policy initiatives, organizational capacity building, and other evidence-based activities aligned with the fund’s priorities.

The fund welcomes applications from organizations, researchers, and initiatives capable of delivering measurable improvements in animal welfare within the priority areas identified by AWF. Particular consideration is given to proposals addressing neglected animal populations, under-resourced regions, and interventions with strong potential for cost-effective and scalable impact. Applications are evaluated based on their expected effectiveness, strategic importance, evidence base, potential for meaningful welfare improvements, and alignment with the fund’s focus on high-impact and historically underfunded opportunities. Organizations seeking core support, movement-building resources, research funding, or implementation funding are encouraged to demonstrate how their work contributes to long-term improvements in animal welfare outcomes and complements broader efforts within the animal advocacy ecosystem.
